The number one attraction is the Great Wall of China. This is where the Great Wall begins, near Dandong, near the North Korean border. From the wall, you can see the Yalu River [1 ], and then the lush plains of North Korea, with watch towers peppered on the Korean side.

We visited the Wall in two places (Dandong and Badaling), and it's usually loaded with domestic tourists.

Go a bit further though, and you're on your own.

Beijing Underground Station. We noticed people working there had nametags - with no names on them, just numbers. The underground had air-conditioning in the carriages, so it wasn't as bad as the Tube in London.

They had a shopping centre dedicated to roasted duck. We went on a Great Wall tour, instead they took us there... No one could speak English. When I walked off to see a temple, the tour just left us there, in the middle of nowhere, outside of Beijing.
